Oregon Casinos and Gambling

Most people wouldn’t list Oregon in a top 10 list of potential gambling destinations, but the state has a wide range of gambling options for residents and visitors. Oregon has nine casinos. All of them are owned and operated by Native American Indian tribes.

The state also allows bars and taverns to have up to six video poker machines, known technically as lottery machines. The machines are licensed and regulated by the state lottery commission and each machine has a maximum bet of $2. The top payout for these machines is capped at $600.

Oregon also has a race track in Portland, called Portland Meadows, which has recently introduced instant gaming machines. You can find more information about Portland Meadows below.

All the casinos located in Oregon offer slots, video poker, and blackjack, and many offer other popular real money casino games. The minimum age to gamble in Oregon is 18 years old for bingo and 21 years old for casinos.

Race Tracks

Oregon only has one horse racing track, Portland Meadows. The track is located in Portland and has live seasonal thoroughbred horse racing.

Other facilities at Portland Meadows include a racebook, which offers off-track betting from races all around the US and the world. The property also includes bar and dining facilities, including two grills.

You won’t find any gaming machines at the track, however, they do have instant racing machines where you can place bets on old races, where the names of the horses and other information isn’t provided.

Off-track betting is available at 11 other venues across the state under the Portland Meadows license.

Oregon used to have greyhound racing at the Multnomah Stadium, and later at Multnomah Greyhound Park. These facilities closed due to low attendance numbers and popularity.

Oregon residents can play the state-run lottery or the national Powerball or Mega Millions drawings. Additional lotteries available in Oregon include Megabucks, Raffle, Keno, Win for Life, Lucky Lines, and Pick4.

Slot Machine Ownership

If you live in Oregon you can own antique slot machines that are at least 25 years old.

Through an interesting twist to the laws in Oregon, you can find many places to play poker. Local jurisdictions can legalize social gaming locations as long as the location doesn’t profit from the game.

This has led to poker games being widely available throughout most of the state.

Oregon poker players also can play at one of the few online poker sites that accept United States players. Online poker is a gray area, so if you have any questions about the legality check with a local attorney before playing for real money. I know plenty of people who play online, but it’s difficult to get a straight answer about if it’s legal or not.

The gambling laws are different in Oregon than anywhere else in the world. Casinos can only be operated by Native American Indian tribes, but almost any bar can run a few video poker machines and poker can be legally played all over the place.

Oregon tends to get a bad rap because it seems every time it’s shown on television it’s raining. The state has some beautiful scenery and if you plan to visit you shouldn’t have any problem finding a casino close to a nice vacation spot.
