Washington Casinos and Gambling

While some people still think of the state of Washington as the birthplace of Starbucks and grunge music, it also has a vibrant gambling scene that includes poker rooms, casinos, racetracks, off-track wagering, and even a state lottery. It may not rival Las Vegas in terms of size, but it still provides more than enough opportunities for gaming enthusiasts to satisfy their cravings.

Racetracks and Pari-Mutuel Betting in Washington

Washington used to have a number of horseracing tracks, but that number has dwindled over the years. Emerald Downs remains a popular destination, however, and live thoroughbred races can be viewed and wagered on from April through September.

There are also several off-track betting facilities throughout the state, although the law limits them to one per county and none within 20 miles of an active track. Five of these facilities are within casinos, but a few self-contained OTB locations are also available.

Washington Lottery

While state law limits each lottery game to no more than one drawing per day, Washington residents still have plenty of opportunities to strike it rich. Their multi-state games include Mega Millions and Powerball, the two most widely-played lottery brands across the nation.

In addition, Washington provides the following games to their residents and anyone passing through the state:

  • Lotto – Players attempt to match six out of 49 possible numbers. The smallest payout is $3, while the largest starts at $1 million.
  • Hit 5 – Players choose five out of 39 numbers and get paid based on the number of matches. The largest prize starts at $100,000.
  • Match 4 – Four out of 24 numbers are selected. The top prize is $10,000.
  • Daily Keno – Players pick 10 numbers from a possible 80 and receive a payout based on the number of matches.
  • Daily Game – The player is paid based on how many matches he can get on three numbers.

Owning a Slot Machine in Washington

According to Washington Code 9.46.235, residents can legally own a slot machine as long as it’s at least 25 years old. However, the machine cannot be used for the purposes of gambling while it’s in the possession of the owner.

The owner is free to allow others to play their machine, but they must either provide the coins or have the slot set up to spin without requiring money. Anything else constitutes a violation of the law, which can lead to seizure of the device and a fine.

The state of Washington is a great place to gamble, whether you’re looking for casino games, poker, or horseracing. When you add in the state’s scenic beauty, mild weather, and availability of online gambling, it’s a paradise that provides a strong alternative to the fast-paced glitz of Las Vegas.
